Backups

Every computer is supposed to be backed up regularly. We want to be protected from:

  1. ransomware/crypto attacks
  2. catastrophic hard disk failure
  3. user error, i.e. accidental file deletion
  4. data center failure

We have a tape drive and library with 60 tapes (12 TB per LTO8 tape).

In S204 it is consistent for all groups (AG Klitzing, AG Schneck, AG Liebchen, Helium):

  1. daily backup on tape around 9:00 for all clients in S204 via Bacula Backup server.

In S207 it is more diverse, depending on work group:

  1. AG Drossel has a seperate backup system and distributed home folders with a strong size limit of 15GB (daily backup on disk)
  2. AG Blochowicz is integrated in the Bacula backup system (daily backup on tape)
  3. AG Vogel has central home folders (daily backup on tape, multiple snapshots per day, flexible size limit)

We can restore files from the day before the backup, daily versions for a week, weekly versions for a month, and monthly versions for 3 months. (TODO: more precise)
